CI October Mini Crop

Today I have a Design Team project up for the October Mini Crop at Creative Inspiration.  My challenge is for you to create a card, tag, layout, ATC or altered project using a "family" theme.  This can include siblings, parents ... anything to do with family.  You must also use some layering on your project.

layering adds visual interest, texture and dimension

I love creating altered art projects so when Deb from D's Paper Studio asked me to be a part of the Handyman's Holiday Blog Hop I was beyond excited!  For me altering a paint brush with a Thanksgiving theme took some thinking ... outside the box.

 

 

1)  I started with a $2.89 3 inch paint brush from Lowe's.

 2) I wanted the bristles removed, nothing a pair of pliers couldn't fix. For this step I enlisted my husbands help.

 

 

 

3)  My process for creating is to gather my paper and embellishments, anything I think I might use.  What will work and what won't ... it's a process of elimination.

 

4) I covered the brush handle with several light coats of white Gesso.

 

5)  I then painted the handle with distress paint, adding layer after layer until I was satisfied with the results.  The hardest part was the waiting for the paint to dry.  That's when the heat gun enters to speed up the drying process.

 

6)  The handle was just to plain for me so I used distress embossing ink and gold embossing powder and stamped on the handle.

 

7) I selected the paper I wanted for the cover and cut it at 2 3/4 inches to fit inside the metal band on the brush handle.

 

 

 

8) To make a match book for the rest of the paper to fit in I scored the cover at 4 3/8 and at 4 5/8 inches.
 

 

9) Then the adventure began to find just the right paper for the insert.  I found a paint chip strip in my stash and some lace along with some burlap and tags that worked perfectly.  I adhered the paper to the cover with liquid glue.

 

 

 

10) I kept the embellishments simple and just added some lace, seam binding ribbon, a flower and my sentiment.
