A few years ago, I purchased a book, Scraptastic, by Ashley Calder. I just found the book on my shelf and have been re-inspired by her unique style. Looking through this book has just boosted my desire to try new techniques on my scrapbook pages.

Therefore, this weekend I tried stamping in gesso:

First, I spread gesso over a chipboard shape with a brush. I varied the thickness but made sure the whole piece was covered.

I lightly misted a rubber stamp with water and pressed it into the gesso. (Make sure to clean off your stamp right away.) To speed up the drying time I used a heat gun.

I then inked over the chipboard shape and then wiped it off with a paper towel to reveal the texture. I did this several times until I reached the desired color I wanted (allow the ink to dry, again I used a heat gun).

I then brushed a small amount of paint over the shape. I rubbed off the excess paint to expose the shadows and highlights.

One of my goals for the New Year was to try a new scrapbooking technique at least twice a month. Although I have used Washi Tape I have never made my own . . . until now.

Washi Tape (Paper Masking Tape) is a multi-purpose adhesive tape made of washi, handmade Japanese paper known for its use by artists and craftspeople. It comes is a variety of colors and patterns. In the last 12 months or so Washi tape has flooded the scrapbooking industry and many major scrapbooking companies have come out with their own versions. It can be used for gift-wrapping, book-marking, arts and crafts, and numerous other projects. It is easy to tear by hand, write on, and remove. Want to make your own?

I used ¾” masking tape.

1) Tear strips of masking tape from the roll and place them sticky side down on an old placemat.

2) Paint tape in desired color and let dry thoroughly. (I used a heat gun to speed up the process.)

3) Stamp with desired design.

I’m so pleased with the results! This is a layout I completed using my handmade Washi Tape.

I supervise twelve lead teachers and 20 associate teachers. I know how hard these ladies work. Most will agree with me that teachers receive pay that is far less equitable than that of the job they so tirelessly perform. One way to counter act such inequalities is to provide acknowledgment and gratitude for a job well done. For the 2011-2012 school year, I have made my grandsons teachers a gift every month. (With five little boys and very little extra time, I know my daughter appreciates this.) Although the boy’s teachers love them and have only good things to say about them . . . a little bribery goes a long way lol!

I think teacher appreciation week is sometime in May, but why wait until then? Believe me . . . a hand written note, baked goods (who doesn’t like a treat), a gift card, a basket of extra classroom supplies (some teachers use their own money for supplies); a container of office supplies (post-it-notes, paper clips, rubber bands etc.) and hand made gifts are all ways to say thank you.

This month the teachers are getting a Mini Calendar.

You will need:
One 12” X 6” strip of cardstock
One 5 ½” X 4 ½” piece of cardstock or patterned paper
One 3 ½” X 4” piece of cardstock or patterned paper (to mat the calendar)
Embellishments (brads, buttons, ribbon, etc.)
Adhesive (liquid glue, glue dots, double-sided tape)
Twelve printed mini calendar months (or a pre-printed mini calendar)

Take you 12” X 6” strip of cardstock.
Score a line at ½”, 1 ½”, 2 ½” and at 7 ¼” down the length of the strip.
Fold the strip on the scored lines to create the base of your calendar.
Use double-sided tape or glue to adhere the ½” tab to the inside of the back base.
Once you have the base assembled, you can put it aside while you create the calendar front.
Take the 3 ½” X 4” piece of paper and adhere the calendar to it.
Take the 5 ½” X 4 ½” piece of paper and embellish, as you like.
Attach the 3 ½” X 4” piece of paper with the calendar on it to the
5 ½” X 4 ½” piece of paper.

I got my calendars from a construction company and they used them as advertisements. My calendars were a little smaller so I adjusted the mat size.

The January sketch is up at MSW and I'll have to say it's one of my favorites! I used a photo that Colton took of himself and his friend Cassie with his camera phone.
In capable hands, a camera phone, the most widely used kind of camera in history, can produce compelling images. Whether it be a random, spur-of-the-moment snapshot or well-thought-out compositions, a camera phone is a valuable tool for photography. Often, the most inspiring pictures occur in everyday life when you do not have a standard camera with you. The phone that you are carrying in your pocket can capture those impromptu photo moments when it's impractical or impossible to have your other camera with you. And, if you know their limitations it is possible to take great, memorable pictures on your camera phone.

I love fresh starts and what better time than the beginning of a new year. It’s time to get rid of some emotional baggage and move forward into a new year with renewed energy.

I don’t make new years resolutions . . . but instead choose one word that describes my vision of the upcoming year.
My word for 2012 is “NEW” - New beginnings, a new outlook and new goals.
Along with that I decided to try a new scrappy/paper crafting technique at least every other week (we’ll see how that goes?!) and post the how to details here on my blog.

Making your own ribbon out of coffee filters:
I saw this idea in a Creating Keepsakes magazine some time ago, actually six years ago. One of those things I always wanted to try and never got around to . . . you know how that goes . . . better late than never. I’ve put my own twist to it and used Glimmer Mist instead of watercolors and gathered it instead of hemming the edges.

1) Smooth the coffee filters out.

2) Spray the coffee filters with Glimmer Mist (or paint them with water colors) and let them dry.

3) Cut the filters into 1” or 2” strips

4) Sew the strips together end to end and trim excess filter and threads

5) Run a gathering thread the length of the sewn together coffee filters and gather the strip

I used to like Christmas . . . but I’m thinking I like it less every year. I remember the first time I missed Christmas . . . 1991, the year my mother died. It’s difficult loosing someone, especially during the holidays. Christmas - it’s not about what it should be anymore. Actually it’s turned into something that people cry and get upset over. I’ve always loved tradition. But it seems to be getting in the way these days. Randy and I are not exchanging gifts this year. We decided that if we wanted something . . . we could get it ourselves . . . and do we really need any more?
So there is no Christmas tree at our house, no Christmas cookie exchange, and I have not even mailed the few Christmas cards that I made and/or bought. The only thing I have done is bought the grandchildren’s presents and made their teacher’s gifts. Am I grinching out about the whole affair?!

I found these and they were meant to be humorous but I found them to be . . . well . . . true.

You may be anal-retentive if:
* you eat the M&Ms in color order.
* you fold your dirty clothes before putting them in the hamper.
* you have to have all boxes in the kitchen cabinets facing the same way and in order by size.
* you have all your canned goods organized by type, flavor, and use.
* you alphabetize your spices.
* you organize your closet by color, season, and fabric.
* every e-mail reply that you send has been through a grammar check . . . and you correct the original message.

The term anal-retentive (commonly abbreviated to anal) describes a person who pays such attention to detail that the obsession becomes an annoyance to others. People who are said to be anal-retentive can also be obsessive compulsive . . . and I thought I was just a little over organized!
I would like to believe this is just my nature and that my anal-retentive behavior . . . I mean my over organized tendencies are just ingrained in me . . . but I think they rubbed off on my children.
We were in Florida over Thanksgiving visiting our daughter Jessica and her family. While we were there I noticed that she is very well organized (she has to be with five little boys) and these anal-retentive tendencies have become more apparent. I noticed little things . . . the way the clothes are hung in the closet (very familiar), certain toys are in certain organizational bins, the toilet paper has to be on a certain way . . . you get the picture. I told my oldest grandson Jacob that I was going to make him some tags for his mother to use to help him be more organized . . . he announced that he hated to be organized. Is this really my grandson talking?
Getting five little boys ready for the week is no easy task. To help Jessica out I made these adorable animal tags labeled Monday through Sunday. Each boy has his own set of tags. Jessica will be able to get their clothes ready and labeled for what day of the week each set of clothes is for. You can never be too organized!

We are a multitasking society and I’m a part of it! If I’m having a conversation with a friend I might also be thinking about what I have to do next, the grocery list or a deadline I have to meet.

All the crazy stress of work . . . the phone calls, the mental sticky notes of things I have to remember to do, planning, meetings, etc. I feel like I have to be on top of things all the time. There are days when I feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained and physically tired.
I’ve made a discovery . . . when I take a little time for “ME” I can recharge my battery . . . and that’s why I try to set aside some time to scrap everyday. I find it relaxing and restorative.

I've been thinking about my scrapbooking style . . . I can't really define it. I'm a little shabby chic and love all things vintage, the tearing and inking and all the fun distressing. But I can be modern and even artistic
. . . which is a little outside my box. After going through my layouts I've discovered I don't adhere to one style . . . I like to mix it up.

I can't believe it's almost the end of the month. I have been super busy at home, at work and on scrappy projects.
. . . and today I have to finish up the grandsons teacher's projects for October so they can go postal tomorrow.

Here are 3 sets that are finished and ready to be packed up.
I got the spools at JoAnn's along with the dowel sticks that Randy cut in half for me. I then painted them with black paint, sanded the edges a little and then covered them with paper from Ehco Park; the Apothecary Collection. I made the little rosettes using the Martha Stewart scoring board (love that thing!) and attached the letters.

With eight grandchildren and seven of them being boys and only one girl I don’t get that many opportunities to do girly girl themed projects. When my daughter Jessica asked me if I could come up with something for her MOPS program I jumped at the chance and knew exactly what I wanted to do. Using my Cricut machine and the Princess Party and the Tags, Bags, Boxes and more carts I created these adorable shoes, purses and cupcake wrappers. Wouldn’t these just be perfect for a Princess Party! . . . I hope they have a royal ball!

Teaching requires tons of patience, impromptu creativity and a sense of responsibility most of us would not want to assume. Besides that I believe in bribery lol!

This paper was in a stack I purchased at Hobby Lobby. When I got it I thought . . . what am I ever going to do with this!? . . . and I actually put it in the give-a-way pile. This morning I happened to think of the cart I had for my Cricut "Summer in Paris" and knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.

I’m not sure what’s happened lately? I’ve never been the kind of person to have UFO’s
(unfinished objects) sitting around. I never work on more than two projects at a time. As I look around my scrappy room I realize that I have five projects in different stages of completeness. And if that’s not bad enough, I have at least another five waiting to get started.

While working on scrap booking layouts today I realized that the problem with adding details to my pages is it takes me hours to decide on what supplies to use and what techniques to try. I sat back and . . . it was like . . . this is all I’ve accomplished?!
But then I decided it’s not about the layouts or the projects. It’s about the process. I find it therapeutic and really enjoy the hunt for the coordinating paper and the search for the perfect embellishment. So for me it’s more about the process and less about the project, it’s more about the doing and less about the end result.

A few weeks ago I went to lunch with my friend Barb. We decided to root through some second hand stores and I found this little cabinet that has so many possibilities! I’m thinking I’ll use it in my scrappy room. I'm thinking a few coats of white paint will do wonders. We’ll see how it turns out?!

The end of summer . . . not really . . . but it is and I know it. I think that each year the end arrives earlier and earlier.

Ten signs that summer is ending:

1) Back to school sales
2) The bottle of aloe is empty
3) No more ice cream truck music
4) Its getting darker earlier
5) My skin is starting to dry out
6) The evenings are getting crisp and cool (unless you live in Texas).
7) Sweet corn is everywhere
8) and I just realized this one . . . the mall, the movie theater, and just public places in general have all changed. All those pesky, ill mannered teenagers whose parents dump them off (as if public places are a daycare for hormonal teenagers) are gone because school has started.
9) Summer items are seriously discounted
10) My flip-flops from Old Navy are paper thin

Creative road blocks happen to the best of us. You want to scrap but that design you have in your head is looking pretty boring. I’ve found that there is nothing like a great sketch to get my mojo flowing. I have to confess . . . I have had a long love affair with manipulating paper.

Whether it’s completing a layout for a scrapbook, working on an altered art project or making an ATC, I never underestimate what the creative imagination can bring to reality.
Every once in awhile I complete a project that really excites me! And although this cake was easy to make (but time consuming), I think it has a certain WOW factor because of all the little details.

I used my Cricut machine to cut the cake and the flowers and my Cuttlebug machine for the embossing. The more I play with my Cricut machine the more I discover what it can do
. . . amazing!

Each piece of cake is an individual box which can be filled with sweet treats and/or little goodies.

Today is one of those days when my mind is cluttered with “stuff”.

It’s hard to find time to relax when you’re trying to juggle the demands of everyday life. At the end of the day the list of “to dos” is never done. And yet, despite the long list of tasks and the daily challenges of job and family . . . I seem to make it work.
To some people relaxing means doing nothing. Relaxing to me means making time to go to the gym, baking, scrapbooking and/or paper crafting.
I hope you find some time to relax this week . . . however you choose.

. . . and since I'm going to be relaxing a little tonight . . . I'll be scrapping :)

Most people I know have had a bad contractor experience to share. These experiences come in a variety of sizes, from bad workmanship, to unfinished jobs, to unforeseen cost over runs or in the worst case scenarios the contractor skips out with your money and does no work at all.

We have done several remodeling jobs in the house over the last few years and I can’t believe the bad luck we’ve had with hiring contractors and getting the work done!

The first home project involved putting in a new kitchen and redoing the upstairs bathroom. The contractor that we hired for that job ended up having to have surgery just before he was scheduled to start the job and sub-contracted the job out. What was supposed to take 3 days ended up taking over 3 months. Parts of the job were so botched up that the original contractor had to sub-contract the job out a second time to tear out and redo the mess that was left behind by the first guy.

The next project was to have (4) new doors installed upstairs. The contractor we hired for this job came highly recommended. He even told us we would never even know he was here. I should have known better. The work that was done was armature at best and he had to come back several times to redo it until it was right. We won’t even get into the cleaning bills for the bedding and/or the total mess he made not only upstairs but throughout the whole house . . . even the basement???

This year we decided to put in new sidewalks. Arrangements were made to have the old walks tore out and the new ones put in while we were on vacation the first part of June. When the house sitter called and told us no one had shown up to work on the walks we got a little worried and started making phone calls. After numerous phone calls we finally reached the contractor and were promised the job would be completed by the time we got home. The nightmare . . . it’s now July 13th (30 days later) and we still do not have walks put in. The yard is torn up, the grass is dying where the workers left their equipment and tools, and there are dangerous metal stakes holding the forms in place. We have been home from our week vacation in FL (where did that week go?) for 5 days and I don’t feel like I’ve accomplished much on my to do list (maybe the list is too long)? I feel guilty when I’m not doing something (cooking, cleaning, and organizing). It must be that hardworking work ethic kind of stuff my parents instilled in me.

I have two more weeks off and I keep promising myself . . . I will take time for me (we’ll see how that goes).

I’m trying to play catch-up with the June challenges at My Sketch World (in-between working on my to do list and getting ready for Jessica, Aaron and the boys to come home).

A vacation is a specific trip or journey, usually for the purpose of recreation or tourism. People often take a vacation during specific holiday observances, or for specific festivals or celebrations. Vacations are often spent with friends or family.
. . . and so this week we have celebrated a birthday, Joshua turned 5,

went to a baseball game and the highlight for the boys was getting their picture taken with the tiger,

spent some time everyday at the pool,

and today we went to the Tampa Lowry Park Zoo.

Even though it was 102 (who goes to the zoo when it's that hot out!?) we enjoyed seeing the 1,700 animals and covering 56 acres (and I really think we covered it ALL!). There were so many unique opportunities if you were interested . . . feeding a giraffe, taking a ride on a camel, holding a lorikeet, feeling a stingray . . . and many more! There were water-play areas for the kids and zoo rides (which the kids loved).

I can’t tell you how glad I am that I’m finished with school! I took my last two finals this week and now I can relax a little and maybe get some sewing and some paper crafting projects done. I have so many projects I would like to work on. I am lucky enough to posses some valued family heirloom . . . my grandmother's handmade linens (I would love to make curtains out of them), all those old photos (that need scrapped), and even my father's football sweater. These items have been handed down from generation to generation and are cherished by each new recipient. Family treasures come in all shapes and sizes. The simplest object can hold the memories of generations past. Each old photograph that I have acts like a window into my family's past. That's why I'm an advid scrapbooker, working to capture those precious memories. I'm really preserving the present for the future and the past for the present.

I have managed to squeeze in a little scrappy time this week and completed the layout sketch and the card sketch challenge at My Sketch World.

I just can’t believe you have graduated! As you start this new journey in your life I know you will continue to be kind, funny, wise, sensitive and interesting.
I want to wish you many wonderful happy days. Keep in mind you are going to have some rough ones too . . . they are important so you can appreciate the good ones. You will have disappointments; I know you will be able to handle them. You know life is 10% of what happens and 90% is how you handle it.
I pray you will be successful. Successful does not mean owning a mansion on a hill, being able to buy the latest and greatest or being famous. The definition of successful is; coming about, taking place, or turning out to be as hoped for. I think successful is the opposite of failure. It means never compromising your integrity while living the life you want.
Be assertive in a positive way. Know what you want and go after it. Doing a hard days work will always make you feel better. Working is more than doing something to make money. Your work is an important part of who you are. It’s where you will invest a great deal of your time. Your work should call to you. It should be something you want to do. Your work should allow you to make a statement about who you are and what you want to say. Love what you do and do what you love.
Always let an outsider feel inside, and always be kind. Many people will forget your name but few people will forget your kindness.
Life is one big learning experience where you are constantly making and remaking yourself with every decision you make.

Teacher/Bus Driver gifts

It’s that time of the year . . . coming up with unique and creative ideas for teachers gifts that won’t cost an arm and a leg (especially when you have 6 teachers to get something for and don’t forget the bus driver). That end of the year gift is a thoughtful way to let you child’s teacher(s) and bus driver know how much she/he is appreciated.

Yesterday I made up 7 bottles for my grandsons to give their teachers and their bus driver. These were super easy to make using scraps from scrapbooking projects and Starbucks bottles.

Ribbon Tutorial and Giveaway

Every once in awhile a new tool, product or trend will appear in the scrapbooking world and I will become obsessed with it. These obsessions last for awhile and then I move on to a new one. These obsessions (in a good way) are little things to rev me up.

My new favorite is seam binding ribbon - loving it! I use ribbon on layouts and cards but I’m not a bow maker by any means. I’ve discovered that this crinkled ribbon is forgiving . . . There is no messing it up!
It's so easy to make . . . you only need 4 things.

What you’ll need:
Spray bottle of water
Glimmer Mist
Seam binding
Heat tool

Spray the binding with water and then scrunch the binding together.

Then spray with Glimmer Mist - I used English Ivy. Scrunch the binding together again.

Keep scrunching and dry with your heat tool.

Note: Wrights seam binding will not work. I used Hug Snug from ZipperStop.

Well after a long gray winter it’s finally starting to look like spring here in Ohio. The flowers are starting to bloom and I’ve even heard birds singing.

A spring tradition at our house is spring cleaning. I know . . . a little weird, but I love to clean and organize things. I’ve actually been accused of being a clean freak!? I don’t know about you but spring cleaning makes me feel energized! Spring is a time of fresh starts, a time to move furniture, clean windows, wash walls and vacuum baseboards . . . all to welcome the return of sunshine and warm weather . . . which I might add is long over due! By the time I’m done our house will be refreshed, renewed and more organized and so will I.

Life Lessons I have learned throughout my life:

We should be glad that God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.
Two people can look at the exact same thing and see completely different things.
The more you know, the more you know you don’t know!

What is Altered Art?

For me it means the transformation or “alteration” of ordinary, everyday objects into artistic pieces using, fabric, paper, paint, ink, vintage treasures and hand made embellishments.
Altered art has a certain look or style . . . old and faded, vintage, antique, worn and distressed.

When I found these 7 Gypsies book covers I knew just what I wanted to do with them. I LOVE making altered journals! I made this one for a friend to give to her daughter for her sixteenth birthday. There are lots of pages for her to record her feelings and pockets and envelopes for her to hide her secrets.

The April 1st sketch is up at My Sketch World . . . and I was inspired to be a little creative and completed a layout that I’m actually going to send to Air Tran Airways. Randy took the picture of the suitcases left out on the tarmac one time when we were flying (thank goodness it was not our luggage). I had him snap the photo because I just new it would come in handy someday. Although the stranded luggage has nothing to do with my ticket situation . . . I’m sure they’ll get the picture and the point of my negative publicity.

I sent the following letter to Air Tran and they did respond within 2 weeks. Their response was not what I was hoping for. They basically told me that since I did not use the ticket it was their’s to resell.

So I’m using my creativity to vent!

We purchased round trip tickets on November 29, 2010 from Columbus, Ohio to Orlando Florida, leaving on February 23rd and returning on February 28th. Because of a work conflict I had to purchase another ticket and fly back to Columbus on the 27th while my husband flew back on the 28th.

While at the Orlando airport my husband heard an announcement that stated that the flight was overbooked and that if anyone was willing to give up their seat they would be given two round trip tickets to anywhere Air Tran flew along with a hotel voucher and a food voucher. My husband approached the counter and explained that he had my ticket that was not being used and that he was interested in the deal. The Air Tran employee stated that if I was not using the ticket it was available for them to use with no compensation to me.

Since I paid for the ticket I feel like I owed the ticket . . . being used our not. I feel that I should be compensated for the price of the ticket which was $79.00 plus fees.

If I would have been on that flight and given up my seat Air Tran would have been willing to pay more than that for their error of overbooking the flight.

I am requesting a refund for the ticket in the amount of $79.00 and fees.

Thank you for taking my request into consideration and avoiding any negative publicity. I prompt response will be appreciated.

Believe it or not I had some extra time this weekend and worked on a few scrappy projects. The challenge at Crop Stop inspired me to make a card and use up some old stash. I think this is the last little bit of October Afternoon . . . loved this paper! The other goodies are a little bit of this and that left over from other projects. It feels good to use up old supplies :)

Don’t take things for granted!

I exercise regularly, eat right and at 58 am not taking any medications at all and consider myself healthy. I think I have taken my health for granted because I’m so lucky to have it.
I have had this little annoying numbness and cramping in my hands and feet . . . a type of unexplained neuropathy. I thought it should be checked out and followed up on the advice of my neurologist and had a routine lumbar puncher preformed. There was nothing routine about it. I ended up leaking spinal fluid . . . what an ordeal! After spending 7 days in bed on my back, a doctors office visit, 2 ER visits and an overnight stay in the hospital . . . what a way for God to get my attention! The down time allowed me to have one of those aha moments. I realized (again) that it’s the little things in life that make the big things in life worth while. I was able to gain some clarity and focus as to what I need to be doing. I never doubted that God was there for me . . . but I did wonder what He had in store for me??? I’m giving God all the praise and glory for my healing.

A week of no scrapbooking or card making caused me to go through paper crafting withdrawal lol!
So this past weekend I created two cards - one for the March 15th card challenge at My Sketch World and

(I loved making the flower out of a zipper!)

the other for the March 17th sketch challenge at AWDML.

It seems like there are not enough hours in the day/week to get everything done! I wonder if that’s true . . . or do I just not use my time efficiently? . . . I don’t think so!

I did a little assessment of my time for an average week -

Sleeping - 49 hours
Grooming - 10.5 hours
Meals - (preparing and clean-up) - 14 hours
Commuting (to/from work) - 5 hours
Errands (grandkids to/from school, post office, cleaners, etc.) - 7 hours
Activities (church, gym, scrap booking, TV, reading, on-line sites, etc.) - 16 hours
Job - 40 hours (and then some)
Total 157.5
There are 168 hours in a week . . .
That leaves me 10.5 hours and I have not done the laundry, cleaned the house or done the shopping or studied . . . I’m out of time!

I did however have enough time to participate in the AWDML Birthday Bash Crop this weekend and managed to get a card and 2 layouts done . . . and won a door prize!

A reflection for today:

I think I’m a “Jack of all Trades and Master of None” . . . and not in a negative way. I feel I’m a generalist; I’m competent with many skills but not a specialist or outstanding in any particular one. Every adult should be able to change a diaper, plan a party, and write a letter (the old fashioned way meaning not an email lol!), change a tire (I better work on this one!), take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve an equation, analyze and solve a problem, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently and dye gallantly.
In my lifetime I have learned a lot about myself and decided to work with my nature instead of against it. Being a generalist works for me because of the following:
Curiosity – I’m a curious person. I have some difficulty staying focused on one subject . . . just because so many things seem interesting to me. I have developed a plethora of skills over the years thanks to my curious nature. If I had to pick one task and specialize in it I would become incredibly bored.
Love of Learning – I believe learning is on-going. I could hate a subject and still enjoy learning about it . . . (maybe?).
Control – So I’ll confess . . . I’m somewhat of a control freak. I’ve learned a lot of what I know so I wouldn’t have to ask others to do it for me. The old adage holds true for me . . . if you want something done right, do it yourself. My version of RIGHT and someone else’s are often totally different. Even if I don’t have time to do something myself, knowing how to do it gives me a sense of leverage that I like.

I have had no problem finding my MOJO lately! I’ve been truly inspired by the awesome sketches posted at My Sketch World. I’ve been scrapping a little every day and trying to keep up with their Firth Anniversary Sketch-A-Thon Crop.

Busy . . . that one word sums up my life right now! Crazy busy with work projects (I feel like I’ll never get caught up . . . and I probably won’t.), busy with school assignments . . . But in all this busyness I have remembered to take some time for me and play.

My grandsons love giving their teachers small treasures and treats on holidays and special occasions. . . . and it just so happens I love making them things to give their teachers.

I made these treat cones using one piece of 12 x 12 patterned paper and my Cricut machine. I used the Winter Woodland Cartridge and cut out the 3dbldg7 (page 81; layers) at fit to page, which cut the cones out at 17 inches. I then cut off the extra flap and glued them together. There was just enough paper left to cut a 1/2 inch wide and 10 inch long handle which I fastened on with brads. I adorned the treat cones with embellishments from my stash. These super cute containers will be filled with shredded tissue paper and candy for some very special teachers.

These treat cones will be on their way to Florida tomorrow (weather permitting). Right now we’re getting freezing rain on top of the snow we got last night. By tomorrow I might not be venturing out to the post office.

I don’t recycle, nope not newspapers, phonebooks, glass, plastic, cans . . . well I have been saving the pop cans. I’m saving the cans in the hopes that the older grandkids will take them to Milliron’s and cash them in for some extra spending money . . . and that has yet to happen.
I guess there is just no motivation to get me to recycle. Does my trash bill go down because I save a plastic bottle – nope. Will I sleep easier knowing that I saved space at the landfill because I saved a plastic bottle – nope.
But on the other hand I wish I could get my hands on a few more of these plastic sweeper filter cases!
I was so inspired by Erica Hettwer's “A Monstrous Treat” tutorial in A Walk Down Memory Lane forums that just this once I became a recycler. I used these cases to make Valentine treat boxes for the younger grandson’s teachers. I used the Fancy Pants Love Birds Collection and some embellishments from my stash.
Six fun size candy bars fit just perfectly in these containers . . . how lucky could I be :)
I love how these turned out . . . oh the possibilities!

A New Year

January seems to be a time of reflection and making resolutions, a time of looking at the past year and deciding if there are changes to be made for the coming year that will ameliorate your life experiences. The most popular resolutions are: to get healthy, get out of debt, get organized, quit smoking, drink less, help other people, spend more time with family and friends, learn something new . . . and enjoy life more.

Statistics show that more resolutions are broken than kept. I’m not a New Year’s resolution maker . . . I am however a goal setter. This year I’ve used the “most popular resolutions list” to set some goals for 2011.
Get Healthy - I exercise on a regular basis and eat right. I weigh what I did in high school and have never felt better!
Getting out of debt - Before making a purchase of any kind I’m asking myself - Do I need it or do I just want it? - easier said than done!
Smoking and Drinking - I don’t do either.
Helping other people - This is one of my goals and although I don’t have a plan in place yet . . . I do have some ideas that I’m excited about! I have always wanted to be involved with a soup kitchen or food pantry . . . and this will be the year to get involved.
Get organized - I have this down pat and really think it’s a personality trait lol!
Spending more time with family and friends - Another goal for this year is to have family and/or friends over at least once a month for a meal and a game night.
Learn something new - Life is one big learning experience and I think I’m constantly learning and relearning with every decision I make . . . and my computer class starts on Tuesday the 4th.
Since I’m an avid scrapbooker my list would not be complete without a goal for that area of my life as well. My scrappy goal is “new” . . . to try new techniques and new scrap styles.
Enjoying life . . . That’s the plan . . . and the future is full of limitless possibilities!

Snow Day

Snow Days - Oh how I love them - a chance to get caught up on things. I'm going to try to get into the dentist today for a tooth that has been bothering me and hopefully it will be a quick fix. The rest of the day I think I'll spend baking Christmas cookies and working on scrappy projects.

It's just not right that I'm in Ohio in the cold and snow while 4 of my grandsons are in Florida where it's still warm enough that they are catching lizards! Love the photos from Jessica of Joshua and his catch.

Gift Card Pockets

A gift card makes a convenient Christmas gift and it’s more thoughtful than just handing over cash. When wrapping or presenting your gift card add a unique and special flair by placing it in a gift card pocket designed by you.
You can make six of these gift card pockets with one sheet of 12 x 12 paper.

Supplies:
1 sheet of Echo Park double sided Christmas paper
1 sheet of Echo Park Element Stickers
1 sheet of Echo Park Alpha Stickers
Glue
Brads
Embellishments of your choice

1) Cut your sheet of 12 X 12 paper into six 6” X 4” pieces. Each piece should be 6” wide and 4” tall.
2) Fold the 6” side in half so you have a piece that is 3” X 4”.
3) Cut off the top half of the top flap of the card in half or diagonal depending on which card pocket you are making. You can also fold them different with either side of the pattern paper showing. (I did three with each side of the paper.)
4) Open you card and lay flat.
5) Decorate the front using the sticker sheets and the embellishments of your choice.
6) Turn your card over (inside of card should be showing) and apply glue to the outer edge and the bottom of the left side and adhere to the back side to make your pocket.

November has not been to bad weather wise with it’s cold mornings and higher than normal temperatures in the afternoons. The skies have been blue and there has been an abundance on sunshine . . . I wonder how long that will last?!

Between work, family and the class I’m taking I haven’t had a lot of extra time . . . just enough time for some scrappy projects and some card making.

I can't believe we took the boys Trick or Treating in 86 degree weather . . . my kind of weather! Poor Joshua was sweating to death in his little dragon costume lol!

Oh the joy of going swimming on a hot October day. Moving to FL is looking better and better.

Do you know someone who is sincere, honest, loyal, truthful, trustworthy and dependable? If you do have a good friend, hang on to them. A good friend knows when to listen, when to correct, when to encourage, when to protect and when to slap you (so to speak). Someone that knows how you feel and knows when they need to be right there . . . but also knows when to step back. Someone who loves you for you and does not judge you for the times when you’re not living up to even your own standards. When thinking of my dearest friend I can’t help but to think of this quote by Sharita Gadison - “Some friends come and go like a season. Others are arranged in our lives for good reason.”

After attending my 40th class reunion and via Face Book I have come in contact with friends I have not connected with in years. Friends are like shoes - both my friends and my perfect pair of boots can bring me intense joy. Just as my favorite pair of flip-flops aren’t perfect for every occasion, neither is every friend I have. I think it’s necessary to have a variety of friends - from comfy to professional. I really feel blessed to know so many people who I can call friends who are encouraging, loving, caring and honest and have a sense of humor.

The end of the month will be here before you know it. Where did October go!? Although I’m not big into Halloween (no decorations at our house) . . . I did make these treat bags for Jacob, Isaac and Joshua's teachers and bus driver. They are packed and will go postal to FL in the morning. I hope the boys can get them to school in one piece lol! Wouldn’t these make cute party favors? Your guest would be in for a spooky . . . or sweet surprise. I made them using my Cricut and the Mini Monsters cart and the Tags, Bags, Boxes & More cart. For the two treat boxes I used the paper from the MME Haunted Collection available at Croppin Paradise.

One of the CP members posted in the forums about the TV show Hoarders and it got me to thinking . . .

To me collecting anything is a ridiculously terrible idea, what’s the point? Maybe it’s just my personality - but I would be stressed out if our house was full of "stuff" or collections (of anything) . . . just more to dust!
I do however have some treasured family keepsakes and photographs. I am lucky enough to possess some valued family heirlooms, from handmade linens to my father’s high school football medals. These items have been handed down from generation to generation and are cherished by each new recipient. Family treasures come in all shapes and sizes. The simplest object can hold the memories of generations. Each photograph that I have acts like a window into my family’s past. That’s why I’m an avid scrapbooker, working to capture the most precious memories. I’m preserving the present for the future and the past for the present.

OK the thing about not collection anything . . . do I have to count scrappy supplies?

For those of you who could not get into the tutorial:

What if . . .

What if you had an embellishment that you could use that would be a quick and easy way to add a feminine touch to any of your crafting projects?
What if this embellishment was easy to alter and could be used in a variety of ways?
What if this embellishment seemed to have no limits, in-that it could be used on masculine projects too?
Well you’re in luck! Flowers are a hot trend in paper crafting and you can make your own, they couldn’t be easier. Take these adorable little flowers made from Crepe Paper streamers for instance.

Supplies needed for each flower:
1 yard of (any color) Crepe Paper Streamers
Scalloped scissors
Glue ( I used Scotch brand Scrapbooker’s Glue)
1 brad

You will need to cut 9 circles from the Crepe Paper using the scalloped scissors.

3 circles that are approximately 1 ¾”
3 circles that are approximately 1 ½”
3 circles that are approximately 1”

(The circles do not need to be perfect.)

Glue the circles together by placing one drop of glue in the center of each circle and staking the circles on top of each other largest to smallest.
Let it dry completely.

Punch a hole in the center of the circles, through all 6 layers and insert a brad.

With your fingers crumble the layers for the desired finished look.

I can’t tell you how thankful I am that the weekend is almost here! I have so many new scrappy supplies to play with and two new Cricut Cartridges. Well I‘ve had the cartridges for a few weeks but I have not had time to get them out of the boxes. Plus my birthday present (a new sewing machine) is still sitting here waiting to be used. So many fun things to play with and so little time.

Taco Soup

1 pound of ground turkey or lean ground beef
1 large onion - chopped
1 package of Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing mix (small)
1 package Taco Seasoning mix
1 can white kidney beans (16 oz.)
1 can pinto beans (16 oz.)
1 can corn (16 oz.)
1 can stewed tomatoes (mexican style) (16 oz.)
1 can stewed tomatoes (16 oz.)
Brown meat with onion, drain excess fat
Place meat and onion along with all other ingredients in a crockpot for 6 hours
(If you want it a little more soupy add a little water.)

40th Class Reunion

I attended my 40th class reunion last night; Shelby Senior High class of 1970. There was something momentous about this occasion. There were a few surprises . . . folks that were rail thin in high school had plumped up considerably. Others who were chunky had illogically thinned down. There was grey hair (mine included), and bald heads, and yes . . . wrinkles. But it was more than a gathering to compare weight gain and weight loss and hair colors and hairlines.

Our class was defined by; hippies, the drug culture, long hair, short dresses, denim, rock and roll and disobedience. It was a time that made us think, express and create in ways that still influence us today.

Way back in 1975 at the first class reunion you could spoof yourself into believing that you were immortal and that you would enjoy an endless succession of get-togethers. But after hitting 58, you cross the threshold of denial . . . it was reflected on the faces around me. Yes, we are aging . . . some more gracefully than others I might add. There were the usual assortment of mid-life health problems. Many were troubled with bad backs, hips and knees. I consider myself very fortunate and blessed indeed to not have any health problems.

Through all the passion and loathing, births and deaths, achievements and failures, the sorrows and the joys of living for 50 plus years . . . these are the people I knew way back when. The nerds, the partiers, the jocks, the clowns, and the dreamers and schemers. There is just something nostalgic about seeing old friends. Why is it that the stories never grow old . . . only the people who are telling them.

Hamburger Soup

Healthy eating is not about sticking to strict nutrition philosophies, or staying away from foods you like. Its about eating smart. It’s about what and how you eat. Watch for lower fat and higher fiber content. Portion control is important! Remember there is a lag time (about 20 minutes) between your stomach being full and your brain knowing it.

This is a healthy, hearty soup that is sure to please your taste buds and fill you up.

Hamburger Soup
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
15 ounces canned diced tomatoes with chilies
4 carrots, peeled and chopped
1 cup corn
4 cups of beef broth
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon of black pepper
½ cup ketchup
1 cup whole wheat pasta

In a skillet cook the ground beef and drain.
Place the ground beef, onion, red pepper, celery, canned diced tomatoes, carrots, corn, beef broth, salt, pepper, and the ketchup and 1 cup of dried whole wheat pasta in a crock-pot. Cook on low for 6 hours.
Serve and savor!

Makes 12 cups
Per Serving:
105 calories, 1g fat, 3g fiber

school, scrapping and a new recipe

The school year for the agency I work for started last Tuesday, September 7th. If you want to talk about a long and hectic week!

But it got me to thinking and reflecting on my early school experiences. Growing up as a Catholic in the 1950’s, I began every single school day with mass. The mass itself was mostly incomprehensible - what little kid knew Latin!? There was this forty five minute daily challenge of what to do while God was at work up there at the alter, in a foreign language.
The nuns kept a tight lid on fidgeting and/or talking to your peers. I can honestly say that the way the nuns dressed perplexed me. They were all uniformly dressed in distinct clothing called habits, a long robe like dress, starched coifs, veils and a looped rosary.
The only nuns I encountered, close up and personal, were harsh, and not very child friendly. In fact, I was educated by nuns who were cruel and most certainly not loving in any way. I have no idea if the church officially sanctioned slapping children or not, but I was on the receiving end of those holy rights and lefts on more than one occasion and often experienced verbal abuse. My Catholic school experiences made me tougher, wiser and less trusting of people in power than I might otherwise have become . . . maybe that’s a good thing. I do know it shaped my image of the nature of teaching.

In the last month I have acquired a ton of scrappy supplies, some for DT projects and some . . . well just because I thought I had to have them.
So many projects to do, so many cool supplies to play with, and so little time.

I’m always looking for easy recipes to try and this one is easy as well as delicious! I would have never thought of using Cottage Cheese like this!

Sunrise Pizza
2 frozen whole wheat or multi grain waffles
1/3 cup Cottage Cheese
1 cup strawberries
1 Tbsp. honey
4 dashes ground cinnamon

(I added 2 Tbsp. whipped topping.)

Prepare the waffles accdording to package directions.
Spread each waffle with a portion of the cottage cheese,
and 1/2 cup of the strawberries.
Drizzle each waffle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon.
Enjoy!

In the last three years we have literally stop eating all white flour and white sugar. Although I think this is a step to eating healthier . . . I don’t think it’s the only way.

Randy and I are physically active (going to the gym five mornings a week and usually three times a week after work to lift weights).
Being physically active is a great way to start healthy living, but you also need to eat nutritious foods.

Eating healthier is easier than you think. Here are five steps to get you started:

1) Use up at least as many calories as you take in.
2) Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups.
3) Check the labels on the foods you purchase for fat and fiber content.
4) Buy healthy foods when you shop. Fresh is best but this does not mean it has to be organic.
5) Learn to cook healthy - use fresh ingredients, use a steamer, or a slow cooker and avoid fried foods.

Irish Stovetop Skillet
Serves 6
Each serving: 142 cal, 2 gm fat, 4 gm fiber

1/3 cup water
3 cups thinly sliced raw potatoes (I leave the skins on)
1 ½ cups chopped onions
3 cups sliced cabbage
1 ½ cups shredded carrots
2 tsp dried parsley flakes
1-8 tsp black pepper
3 (2.5 oz.) pkgs Carl Budding Lean Corned Beef, shredded

Put water in bottom of a large skillet. Arrange sliced potatoes in water. Layer onion, cabbage, carrots, parsley and pepper over potatoes. Top with the corned beef.
Cover and simmer over med heat for 20 minutes. Mix well before serving

I've had a little bit a free time this weekend, enough to work on some necklaces that I found on the Big Picture Scrapbooking Big Idea Festival taught by Georgana Hall. I just changed them up a little and added some rub-ons and inked the edges. These turned out so cute that I could be making them in ever color:) And can you believe these are made from a wahser, scrap paper, Mod Podge and some cording?!

Another summer gone . . . Halloween candy and costumes are out in the stores . . . Where oh where has summer gone? Summers seemed longer when I was a kid! Does time move more rapidly the older you get? Maybe it’s because instead of looking at one l o n g year I tend to block it off . . . New Years to Valentines Day, then Easter to Mothers Day and Fathers Day. Then July 4th to Labor Day. Then Halloween to Thanksgiving and then Christmas . . . and before you know it the whole year is gone. I think I have enough summer photos of the grandchildren to scrap to help keep me in the mindset of summer for at least a little while. These are the latest layouts for their albums.

Every time Randy and I take a cruise we say that we wished we would have taken some dance lessons so we could knock everybody’s socks off on the dance floor.

So we finally took the first step - literally! Two weeks ago we went to our first “Ballroom Dancing” lesson. OK if we would have known that it was this much fun we would have went before!

We have learned (or should I say are learning) the Waltz, the Foxtrot and the Cha Cha Cha. I think my favorite is the Waltz - a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, flowing movements, continuous turns and rise and fall steps. I think you are suppose to be able to glide around the floor effortlessly . . . I’ll just say we need to practice!

Talent Show Project

This week at Camp Paradise the DT is showcasing their talents. Make sure to stop by and check out the awesome projects.
I love using my scrapbooking supplies for home decor projects. For my talent I'm sharing a wreath I made for our family room.

Materials:

Brown wrapping paper ( the kind you use for mailing packages)
Cricut machine
Serenade Cart
Foam wreath
Glue gun
Pencil
Patterned paper for the butterflies

I used brown postal wrapping paper (the kind you buy on a roll for mailing packages) for the flowers. I cut the paper into 12X12 sheets and ran them though my Cricut machine.

I used the scalloped flower on the Serenade cart and cut them at 2 ¾”. When I had a nice size pile of flowers (several hundred) I folded them in half to find the middle.

I then used the eraser end of the pencil and pressed it into the center of each flower till it folded up.

I put a dab of hot glue on the middle of the bottom of the scalloped flower and stuck it to my wreath.

I then cut out butterflies of varying sizes using the Serenade cart and added them to the wreath. I attached a piece of ribbon to the back of the wreath for hanging.

Did you know . . .

A butterfly has compound eyes; each eye is made up of about 6,000 tiny parts called lenses, which let in light.

All butterflies have 6 legs. In some species such as the monarch, the front pair of legs remains tucked up under the body most of the time and are difficult to see.

Butterflies have very brief life spans. Some - usually the ones found in the tropics can live up to a year, but others live anywhere from a few months to a few weeks to even a few hours.

We had a date night last night - dinner and a movie. While we were waiting in line for the movies I was memorized by what I saw people wearing (young and old alike). This got me to thinking about my fashion statement and where it came from.

In the 50’s getting dressed didn’t take much effort or imagination. I had to wear a school uniform which consisted of a navy blue jumper, a white blouse, white socks and polished shoes, oh and that little beanie for the top of my head. I would have had a hard time expressing any individuality with the clothes that populated my closet back then. In the 60’s fashion was a roller coaster. What was in style one week might be out of style the next. Saddle shoes were a must have and I only wore dresses or skirts and blouses, no pants to school, even in the winter. Then came penny-loafers, mini skirts and short shorts aka hot pants. The 70’s came along with beads, belts, earth shoes and sandals. Jeans went from skinny (so tight I could barely get them over my ankles) to bell bottoms (the wider the better). I had a choice of the mini, the midi or the maxi and flower power was everywhere. Fashion was crazy! Today despite that I am a lover of fashion and clothes; I always try to take trendy clothes with a grain of salt. I’m trying to have the mind set to buy fewer clothing items and to purchase better quality items that fit perfectly and that I’m comfortable in. I have come to the conclusion that there are a lot of people out there who do not own a mirror! - Seriously!
